Controversial creators of smash hit late night show South Park have completely lost their mind with this one and have managed to come up with a musical that has offended the daylight out of several people. But knowing Matt Stone and Trey Parker it is probably what they were aiming for.
I’m not a fan of musicals but after seeing all the hype surrounding the particular musical I decided to purchase Book of Mormon Tickets from TicketVistas and see what all the fuss was about. I hate to admit it but The Book of Mormon, despite being extremely offensive and laced with profanities, is the most hilarious musical to come out after popular smash hit Urinetown.
The funny thing is that despite its sacrilegious storyline concerning Mormons, even the Church of Mormon has purchased ads in the play stating “You’ve seen the play … now read the book”. The musical takes shot after shot at the Mormon Church but carefully excludes practicing Mormons who, surprisingly, have been portrayed as kind-hearted, family oriented individuals, which is extremely abnormal for a show that is overloaded with profanity. Jesus dressed in a light costume along with Joseph Smith in a spray tan and blond wig and a silent Brigham Young constantly ridicule The Mormon church’s origin story and question the church’s official stance on homosexuality and acceptance of black people as its members.
Central to the storyline is a handsome and popular Mormon from Utah named Elder Kevin Price and his two-year long mission. In spite of his continuous praying to get transferred to his favorite city Orlando, Price, much to his dismay, is sent on a mission to Uganda with a socially challenged missionary by the name of Elder Arnold Cunningham.
Upon arrival the Mormon missionaries discover that the poverty stricken town has problem of its own and is facing famine, violence, disease and not to mention the tyranny of a warlord who derives pleasure out of raping virgin girls.
The musical has won just about every major Outstanding Musical Award Broadway has to offer including a whopping 9 Tony Awards and in the process has made a fan out of me along with millions of people all over the country.
If you’re not sensitive towards sacrilegious content then I would highly recommend you buy The Book of Mormon Broadway Tickets and attend a presentation of this fantastic musical on Broadway. I guarantee you’ll be LOL’ing in no time.
